I’m not celebrating Canada Day

The year-long lead-up to the celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial has amazingly lacked awareness of how much this has been a celebration of colonialism in much of the country. It’s not like it’s been absent from the news, though. The whole spectacle has only reinforced the current government’s broken promises regarding reconciliation and recognition.

I want to acknowledge that I am a guest on the land that is territory of the Huron-Wendat,  Haudenosaunee, Anishinabek, and Mississaugas of the Credit River.

Where did January Go?

It’s been a pretty shitty month for a lot of people, especially since inauguration. Being Canadian, I’m less impacted than lots of the people I’ve interacted with on here, but we aren’t idle up North, both in showing support for what’s going on in the US, or to ensure the same craziness doesn’t happen here, as racists have been emboldened. Combine that with some preventable issues related to my last job that are going to cost me, and this January kicked my ass. Continue reading
