Things to do in October when you Dread

Here’s a few quick suggestions

The Kasturi/Files on Speculative Chic

Follow Sandra Kasturi and Gemma Files as they recap a bunch of movies.

There have been 3 so far. The Haunting, The Thing, and Midsommar. If they recap Viy and The Boxer’s Omen, it’s because I asked nicely enough.

Watch Draug, which is finally available on many streaming services after several years in production. It’s got beautiful lighting, but unless you speak Swedish, you’ll need to be in the mood for subtitles. Medieval witch horror.

Listen to some of the many episodes of the Outer Dark podcast. The latest is Female, Binary, and Queer Bodies in a Weird Space (#55) with Sunny Moraine, Craig Laurence Gidney, Damian Angelica Walters, Laura Blackwell, Zin E Rocklynn

Dim Shores has a new book available from Brooke Warra

Dig into this history of ballet in horror (and please share all your dance horror titles for literature and film).

Time out

Not feeling like engaging much, with the main reason being the insanity to the South and bad election results followed by insanity here. Too much time also spent fixing others mistakes, or situations that should never have existed in the first place. All unpaid labour, of course. But I am reading a new Donald Pulker story… so maybe I’ll be back sooner instead of later.

Women in Horror 2018

Because timing for everything is so far off what I thought it’d be, I have no idea if I’ll be able to do anything specific to celebrate Women in Horror this year, but I’ll try. Here’s some of what I’m planning for the month, and some creators (and locals) who I think are worth knowing about. Continue reading
