Last night I went to see the new Ghostbusters movie and had a great time. Really there’s no excuse for all the hate that’s been spewed over this movie… but that should be clear by now. When I saw the first trailer, I was completely unimpressed, and thankfully, the movie really isn’t anything like that. Many of my original reservations – that it looked cheesy, that Patty’s character was stereotypically sassy, the potential of Melissa McCarthy being too ridiculous and not funny, and it just being an unnecessary reboot – turned out to be completely unfounded. McCarthy was restrained enough to be hilarious, Patty was more complex and interesting than hinted at by the trailer, the story was enough its own and funnier than the original – more of the cartoon vibe from what I remember of it – but Kate McKinnon completely stole the show. You could do a lot worse in your movie-going choices.
Speaking of which, I may doing exactly that tonight when I go see the new Star Trek. It’s so hot right now, and rather than blow-out our AC, a movie seems like a decent choice. At least it’s not supposed to be total garbage.
Meanwhile, I’m spending the day in as few clothes as is decent, proofreading an article my wife wrote (5 years ago! Oh, the beauty of scholarly publishing) so she can finish all her revisions for her PhD, due in 2 weeks. And that’s not a bad way to pass the time.
